Origins of the name "Hudson River"

[edit]

According to the article, John Carwitham's 1740 plan of NYC was the first to use the name "Hudson('s) River". This is patently untrue. The name appears in a 1664 charter granting what had been New Netherland to the Duke of York, and also in a map produced in the same year. Zacwill (talk) 01:53, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a still earlier attestation, from Purchas his Pilgrimes (1625). Zacwill (talk) 22:26, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The wording is wonky, but the article says it's the first to use the term on a map, and neither of those are maps. The [NYT article] linked to also says that it was "customarily called" Hudson's at the time. Harryhenry1 (talk) 03:10, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Even with that caveat, the claim isn't true. See the map linked in my first post. Zacwill (talk) 16:38, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation between Hudson River and Hudson Bay

[edit]

Is it a good idea to add a blurb at the top that says "Not to be confused with Hudson Bay."? 216.73.73.162 (talk) 19:02, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
